Korean Language Course Levels
Non-native Korean speakers may take the TOPIK, or Test of Proficiency in Korean, to demonstrate their proficiency in the language. Each year, the test is administered six times to provide sufficient preparation time. What exactly is TOPIK?
The Korean language test TOPIK, also known as the Test of Proficiency in Korean, is a written examination designed to evaluate non-native speakers’ ability to communicate and grasp what they hear in the Korean language.
The TOPIK exam assesses a person’s ability to read, write, and comprehend what they listen to in the Korean language. There are three different levels of difficulty in the test: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Additionally, accuracy is conveyed by six grades, two of which are matched to each level to assess competency.
TOPIK Test Structure
TOPIK is divided into two levels: TOPIK-I and TOPIK-II. TOPIK-I, or the beginner level, has two sublevels: 1 and 2, while TOPIK-II, or the Intermediate-Advanced level, has four sublevels: 3, 4, 5, and 6. Test takers are assigned a level between 1 and 6, depending on their overall test result.
Test takers who complete the prerequisites will get a formal certificate with one of six potential grades: low beginner (level 1), high beginner (level 2), low intermediate (level 3), high intermediate (level 4), low advanced (level 5) and high advanced (level 6). (level 6).

TOPIK-I (Level 1-2) is divided into two sections: Reading and Listening. TOPIK II (Level 3-6), the combined Intermediate-Advanced exam, is divided into three sections: reading, listening, and writing.
Each component is evaluated out of 100 points, with a total of 200 points available for the Beginner level and 300 points available for the Intermediate-Advanced level. The exam contains parts on writing, listening, and multiple-choice questions.
The exam consists of two 90-minute sessions separated by a 30-minute break. The first session assesses vocabulary and grammar, and writing, while the second assesses listening and reading.
